Tour’s tragic act of remembrance

“Armstrong to ride in memory of team-mate who died ten years ago”

“Fabio was a great guy, I loved him,” said Armstrong after yesterday’s stage to Montpellier, “and on Sunday I’ll ride in his memory.”

The next day, Monday, will be ten years to the day since Casartelli’s death. Armstrong will fly by helicopter to the Casartelli monument, an elegant white Carrara marble sculpture that stands on the Portet d’Aspet, in the company of Leblanc, the Italian’s parents, Sergio and Rosa, his widow, Annalisa, and his son, Marco, who was a month old when his father died.
