“Sharron Davies, the BBC presenter and former Olympic silver medallist, has accused Bill Sweetenham of being a coward for stepping down as British Swimming’s performance director less than a year before the Beijing Games.
Davies was one of Sweetenham’s fiercest critics during the formidable Australian’s controversial seven-year reign, with one row leading to him refusing to be interviewed by her at the 2005 World Championships.
Sweetenham has cited personal reasons – said to be related to the death of his father and his mother’s ill health – for asking to be released from his contract a year early. But that has not spared him from a stinging attack by Davies, who won silver in the 400meters medley in Moscow in 1980.”
